So many big red tomatoes hang on these plants. Fruits weigh about 1 lb each. Delicious paste tomato for all your sauce needs.
Whenever I would catch up with Ian Ward from Les Jardins Glenelm, he would tell me about this amazing Italian tomato he had. He said he should really share some of the seeds with us. Ian got some of those seeds to us in early May.
Early May is a little late to start tomatoes for the season but we knew there was a bit of space in the crop plan between the Burgundy Okra and Mosaic Mix Beans. So, Emily started some plants from these seeds. If we were lucky we’d at least get to taste a couple of these tomatoes to get a first impression.
We planted some pretty small tomato plants in early June and wished them luck.
By the end of August these small plants had caught up with the rest of the tomatoes. Each plant was covered with so many fruits. Over 25 tomatoes per plant! And these tomatoes were big. They weighed about 1 lb each. I couldn’t wait to get home and cook some up. That night we made a delicious spaghetti sauce.
One thing to note is that the tomatoes have a bit of yellowing on the shoulders when they are fully mature. Otherwise good yield, good taste, successful in the field even though they went in late. These tomatoes were winners.
I called up Ian to tell him he was right about how great this tomato was. I asked him what else he could tell me about these tomatoes. Ian told me they were called Italian Heirloom and he had obtained them as a bonus gift when he’d received a seed order from Seed Savers Exchange. Ian was excited that we were validating his tomato experience and added “I really think more folks should be growing these tomatoes in their gardens.” We do too!
I hope you enjoy this paste tomato but try to plant it on time!
