Mid season red yardlong bean that can be grown outdoors in zone 5. Harvest at 18” for best flavour.
Yardlong beans are stunning in your garden one way or the other but I prefer the look of red yardlong beans hanging off plants over the green varieties.
So I was thrilled that the second earliest maturing yardlong bean in our trials was Red Noodle - a red variety we got from Le Noyau Seeds. It is a couple weeks later than green-podded Liana (which was remarkably early for a yardlong bean.) However, Red Noodle produced heavier yields of pods than Liana.
Red Noodle has that crisp fresh yardlong bean flavour some folks say taste like asparagus but I find they taste more like snap beans.
Red Noodle can grow outdoors in zone 5 but if you’re in zone 4, you should try Liana instead. (Or grow them in a tunnel or greenhouse.)
Whether you’re familiar with yardlong beans or not, you’ll be impressed by these plants in your garden!
